Sep 24 (Fri), 2:30-3:20, W307 PBB Using Branch-and-Price to Find High Quality Solutions Quickly Mike Hewitt Our research presents a new approach for solving integer programs that possesses the primal-side capabilities of heuristic procedures and the dual-side capabilities of branch-and-bound-based techniques. In addition, we present examples of how the approach can be applied to a challenging transportation-related problem, the Multi-commodity Fixed Charge Network Flow problem, to yield an algorithm that produces high-quality solutions much more quickly than a state-of-the-art mixed integer programming solver. Lastly, we present our latest application of the procedure, a maritime inventory routing problem, and computational evidence of its effectiveness. |

Dec 3 (Fri), 2:30-3:20, W307 PBB Mathletics: How Math Makes Sports Teams Better Wayne Winston We will discuss how baseball, football and basketball teams can use math to improve team performance. Topics include • Evaluation of hitters, pitchers and fielders. • Why passing is better than running • How should we rate QB's and running backs? • How should we rank sports teams; Why are BCS computers messed up? • How do we evaluate NBA players and lineups? • What is the next mathletics frontier? |
